Hot Mulled Apple Cider

Mulled Apple Cider is a delicious seasonal drink to be enjoyed with the best of company or in the peace and tranquility of solitude.



1 gallon  fresh unfiltered apple cider

6 slices orange rind, 1/2″ thick

1/4 tsp ground ginger

1 tsp of whole cloves

1 tsp whole allspice

7 pods of cardamom

3-6 cinnamon sticks

cheesecloth for spice bundle


Simmer time: 30 minutes

  1. Pour 1 gallon of fresh unfiltered apple cider into a large saucepan, pot, kettle… cover and bring to a simmer.

  2. Add slices of orange rind and ground ginger to the cider

  3. Place 1 tsp of whole cloves, 1 tsp whole allspice, and 3 cinnamon sticks broken up,  7 pods of cardamom on a square of cheesecloth and tie into a bundle, or toss in loose into pot.

  4. Stir cider regularly while bringing to a boil then lower back to simmer for another 15 minutes and cover.  Stir occasionally.

  5. Remove/strain the spices from the pot using a fine meshed sieve.

  6. Ladle hot mulled cider into warmed mugs.

  7. Add snip of brandy or spiced rum if desired

  8. Garnish with cinnamon sticks or orange slices
